Quill of Scribing

Quills of Scribing are extraordinary magical quills that enable scribes to create multiple copies of a text at once. A set of quills are attuned to a single master quill and animate to copy whatever is written by the master quill. The invention allows a single scribe to produce up to ten copies of a text at once.   The Quills have no sensory capabilities of their own, so it is essential that the book is roughly equivalent in size to what the master quill is writing on. It is recommended that someone supervises the secondary quills to make sure they do not overwrite important information. The first generation of Quills were primarily used in writing halls where people were on hand to turn the page as needed, but the second generation have additional enchantments that allow them to turn the page on their own.

Production

The basic enchantment of the Quills of Scribing are done with engraved runes. The secondary quills are usually made from mundane goose feathers, while the master quills are made of harpy, griffin, or swan feathers. A few exceptions exist, but collectors loathe to part with them.   The Quills of Scribing were invented by Artificer Frederikke Whistlework. The first set of quills was created in 218 IE as a gift for socialite and future Chamberlain Aristanne Vilmaris, an avid letterwriter. The initial market was divided between artisan quills made on commission for the wealthiest citizens of the Castellan Kingdoms and mass orders from Scriptoriums eager to increase their production.   Mass production started a few years later in 225 IE, when Whistlework took on apprentices specifically for creating Quills of Scribing. She sold a copy of her blueprints to the Bookwardens for a undisclosed, but clearly sizable sum as part of their early Patent Program. By the end of the decade Quills of Scribing were ubiquitous at modern Scriptoriums.

Usage

Modern Scriptoriums are built around the Quills of Scribing. Each scribe sits at a desk with ten books, one of which is raised on a small lectern to the scribes preference. These days the scribe is expected to keep an eye on all the quills to make sure they're adequately inked and correctly placed. A good scribe can make upwards of 15 gold a week.   The Quills are a favourite tool of the Guild of Accountants. Each Accountant wields a master quill, which is tied to a secondary quill in the Guild Hall. This enables the Guild to keep a copy of all the books they work on, for additional security and oversight.

That was really amazing! I really like how you thought of all the little details, like the fact that the dimensions of the medium need to be the same, or the "second generation" quills turning pages on their own.   I really enjoyed reading about these quills :)

Thank you so much! I'm hoping to add even more little touches of history later, I love reading and writing about how something has developed over time ^^

This is such a fascinating idea - I can see so many potential uses for these! I especially like that the Guild of Accountants use them to keep copies. I bet it's really obvious if someone makes a change in a copy.

Thank you so much! That's exactly why they use them, to be able to prove it when people alter their ledgers.

A wonderful idea, and I like how much thought you put into the limitations and use cases!

Thank you! I might go back and add even more, but I think it's best to start on the next prompt first ^^

It's such a cool idea of how magic works on a day-to-day level and how it can sometimes work to replace technology - very well done indeed :D And the Guild of Accountants sounds amazing, I can't wait to read about them, hahah!

Thank you! I love thinking about how magic influences the mundane elements of a world. Honestly, the mundane and everyday is my favourite to worldbuild, I find it does wonders to make a world feel like somewhere you could live.   And yes, I love the Guild of Accountants. There's just something fun about making the most mundane things we can imagine in real life magical.

Great magical photocopy technology :D My first thought was does it also work with dictation or is it only copied written text? But it would probably requires a different set of magic to be worked into it. I like how basic everything is here and that the quill can only obey the parameters input into them and not "decide" thing like when to go back to the line on their own :p It makes it more realistic and more fun to work within the limitations :D

Thanks! A scribe could absolutely take dictation with a Quill of Scribing, I assume the risk of error is higher. The Quills do however need a writer to work, they are more so mimicking the Master Quill than doing any writing of their own.   I'm glad you like the limitations! I agree that they help keep things realistic and grounded. After all, we don't have perfect technology in real life either, there's always some odd quirk or fifty!

Wow, 10 copies at once has *huge* implications in a pre-printing press world. Do newspapers and political canvassers use them?

It certainly does! It's part of how I justify books and reading material being as widespread and cheap in the Morning Realm as they are.   Newspapers and flyers aren't quite a thing yet, I imagine the limiting factor is more that paper/parchment isn't cheap enough. That is very much something that might change as the Morning Realm industrializes.   If someone had the money and desire to mass produce flyers or something, they would still probably prefer to hire a Scriptorium for the production rather than purchasing a set of Quills themselves. After all, the Quills are quite the upfront cost, a masterful scribe would have to save ten months worth of pay to afford a the cheapest set (which is likely only a master quill with a single secondary quill, not a full set of ten)
