Quills of Scribing are extraordinary magical quills that enable scribes to create multiple copies of a text at once. A set of quills are attuned to a single master quill and animate to copy whatever is written by the master quill. The invention allows a single scribe to produce up to ten copies of a text at once.
The Quills have no sensory capabilities of their own, so it is essential that the book is roughly equivalent in size to what the master quill is writing on. It is recommended that someone supervises the secondary quills to make sure they do not overwrite important information. The first generation of Quills were primarily used in
writing halls where people were on hand to turn the page as needed, but the second generation have additional enchantments that allow them to turn the page on their own.
Production
The basic enchantment of the Quills of Scribing are done with engraved runes. The secondary quills are usually made from mundane goose feathers, while the master quills are made of harpy, griffin, or swan feathers. A few exceptions exist, but collectors loathe to part with them.
The Quills of Scribing were invented by Artificer
Frederikke Whistlework. The first set of quills was created in 218 IE as a gift for socialite and future
Chamberlain Aristanne Vilmaris, an avid letterwriter. The initial market was divided between artisan quills made on commission for the wealthiest citizens of the
Castellan Kingdoms and mass orders from Scriptoriums eager to increase their production.
Mass production started a few years later in 225 IE, when Whistlework took on apprentices specifically for creating Quills of Scribing. She sold a copy of her blueprints to the
Bookwardens for a undisclosed, but clearly sizable sum as part of their early
Patent Program. By the end of the decade Quills of Scribing were ubiquitous at modern Scriptoriums.
Usage
Modern Scriptoriums are built around the Quills of Scribing. Each scribe sits at a desk with ten books, one of which is raised on a small lectern to the scribes preference. These days the scribe is expected to keep an eye on all the quills to make sure they're adequately inked and correctly placed. A good scribe can make upwards of 15 gold a week.
The Quills are a favourite tool of the
Guild of Accountants. Each Accountant wields a master quill, which is tied to a secondary quill in the Guild Hall. This enables the Guild to keep a copy of all the books they work on, for additional security and oversight.
That was really amazing! I really like how you thought of all the little details, like the fact that the dimensions of the medium need to be the same, or the "second generation" quills turning pages on their own. I really enjoyed reading about these quills :)
Thank you so much! I'm hoping to add even more little touches of history later, I love reading and writing about how something has developed over time ^^
