Revelation of the Signs

This prophecy was revealed to the elven oracle of Ashe, mouth of Valor, sometime late during the Spoken Era.

The First Sign

The first sign shall be a deep wound to the worldspine
It will bleed evil hereto unseen,
and all that touch it will be changed forever
This shall end the dawn
Blood will mark the day

The Second Sign

The second sign shall be be the end of kings
Their crowns will melt upon his brow
and ichor will flood the streets
This shall end the morning
Gold will mark the day

The Third Sign

The third sign shall be a terrible storm
That tears the land asunder
Prayer will go unanswered
This shall end the noon
Salt will mark the day

The Fourth Sign

The fourth sign shall be the failure of men
Hunger will sweep the cities clean
and Son shall fall upon father, brother upon brother
This shall end the afternoon
Meat will mark the day

The Fifth Sign

The fifth sign shall be a dying sun
Earth will give way to sea
and the last dragon will drown
This shall end the evening
Quiet will mark the day

The Sixth Sign

The last sign shall be a three-prong leaf
Falling gentle to the ground
Then the world shall quake
This shall end the world
Breath will mark the day

An Academic Opines

There is much controversy over whether this prophecy speaks true. Revelation is the most widely known elven prophecy, mostly (in this author's opinion, entirely) because it is written in a style that is digestible even by the common masses, with an almost anachronistically simple and straightforward structure, as well as a clear meaning—that is, a prediction of the end of the world.   Another reason many are fans of Revelation is that such drama is appealing to those with little other interest in the academics. Few appreciate the historic nature and stunning 4-2-4.5 verse of a masterful prophecy such as the Our Mother Cried Tears Upon This Earth (Rain Prophecy 14), as it takes years — nay, decades — of dedicated scholarship to fully interpret the depths of such a prophecy. Revelation, on the other hand, is a narrative so simple that it is akin to a common folk tale told around a tavern. The world will end, and here are six signs that it'll happen, and astoundingly one of the signs could be charitably have been read to already have happened!   The Abyssal Rift was, in fact, discovered after the recording of the prophecy. However, one part of a prophecy being somewhat interpretable as some event that happened later does not a genuine prophecy make. There are countless prophecies who have gotten portions of their contents correct yet have been ultimately disproven.   Additionally, it seems that if this prophecy were indeed true, the end of the world ought to have happened already. Men are nothing but failure, as can be evidenced by the countless wars they have inflicted on each other, and their sub-century lifespan will ensure that they will die off in spite of any divine intervention.   — Excerpt from Academian Serilian Lloderion's textbook "An Overview of Modern Prophecy".

Nice article. I like the repeating sentences in your prophecy with the 'will mark the day'.

Thank you! Having a strict structure helped a lot. My first draft was *all* over the place.

Yeah it is quite difficult to come up with a nice structure for these kinds of things. I had issues with it as well xp

I'm really digging the way you've structured the prophecy and the way it sings (scary about the dying sun, I am worried there!) with the academic opinion on the side. Great stuff :D   Are there any variants on it, secret verses, or ways to prevent it?

While a lot of Elven prophecies do contain apocrypha and works that are only debatably canonical, the Revelation of the Signs was revealed all at once by a oracle who never gave another prophecy. The only variants that are accepted for the Revelation are translations, which may alter a detail here and there.   I definitely want to go in and add some of the opinions on what each sign means after the summercamp ceremony though ^^
