Spirit

The Spirit, also known as Anima Spiritus or Cold Breath, is the incorporeal essence of all living beings who do not have souls. Many believe even inanimate objects have spirits. Fey, demons, and other supernatural beings have spirits instead of souls.   The study of souls and spirits is called Animology. Animologists say that a spirit thrives on worship and reverence. Worship empowers and exalts spirits, leading some to claim that even the gods themselves are spirits.

Origin

The origin of spirits is even less understood than that of souls. Some theorize it is formed by coalesced ambient magical energy, others claim it is a devolution of souls, and others yet claim it is a lesser amount of the divine essence granted by the creator-god Ea.

Conjuration

Conjuration is the art of creating beings or material out of spirits. It is primarily the School of Conjuration, as taught in magical universities, that teaches that spirits are little more than coalesced ambient magical energy.   Familiars and other conjured beings are not quite equivalent to their material counterpart. The summoner is able to give orders to their conjurations that the equivalent animal or being would not be capable of comprehending. The conjurations simply cease to exist when they are defeated.

Nice article! Do other sources of magic interact with spirits or is it only conjuration?

Thank you! I believe there would be others, but off the top of my head I can only think of Commune spells. I think some would also argue that spirits are the source of druidic magic, and others may say that could just as well be true for divine magic.
