Military

The confedaracy is infamous for it's extensive usage of mercenary forces in it's military. Private armies are usually loyal to a specific merchant king rather than a province, and are typically used as guards or mainline battle troops, while specialised companies of sellswords, brigands and mercenary guilds are committed to more sensitive or crucial military offensives. Due to this rather unique approach regarding it's military, the confederacy harnesses the advantage of attracting mercenary guilds from all over the world, which each uses a variety of battlefield tactics and strategies, making it difficult for the foes of the merchant kings to adapt to one particular style of combat. Viewing it's military as an expense rather than a neccasity, the expense of defense budgets and military expansion is something that must be justified to the merchant council before approval, creating a unique (and dangerous) scenario where it is profitable for many parties involved to keep the likelihood of small scale-conflicts high.
