The Necklace of Enis Whitefinger

The Necklace of Enis Whitefinger is a tragic tale of one family destroyed greed and another begun by charity.   A gem cutter was once gifted a huge emerald from an admiring patron. It was his pride and joy. His children, who'd fought for their father's attention and approval all their lives, squabbled over the gem after his death. The rivalry became deadly as brother and sisters turned against one another and the gem cutter's grandchildren started a house war. The emerald passed from house to house as each family member tried to outdo the last and steal it back to the "rightful" heirs.   After years of bloodshed, the city magistrate took the jewel and broke it into thirteen pieces. One of the surviving heirs who lusted for power cared nothing for the gem and threw its pieces into the gutter. She continued the war with little concern for the beauty of the gem, only its symbol of power.   A brave young maid named Enis Whitefinger went down into the sewers and searched for weeks for the pieces of the gem. Out of the thirteen, she found three. Instead of keeping them or selling them, she gave them to her master, one of the youngest grandchildren of the gem cutter, who was lowest in ranking among the heirs. He was so moved by the poor young woman's charity, he took the four shards and had them made into a necklace, which he gave to back to Enis.   A short time later the two were madly in love and left the country to find their own happiness, far away from the family squabbles. The lived happily ever after.
