Consumption

Ancient beyond measure, Consumption may be one of the earliest Occultarum that ever spawned in the void. A creature of constant blind hunger, Consumption has only recently been drawn towards the light of humanity. Darkness has heralded its coming and even the other Occultarum fear the old beast. To Consumption, even they are little more then a feast waiting.

A Sight Of Consumption

Consumption is an endless mass of undulating spheres, ranging in color from black as the void to a sickly purple in in size from small to titanic. These move without rest, submerging within the greater mass and reemerging again, giving the creature the appearance of the same constant motion as maggots crawling just beneath rotting skin. Consumption has no discernible front or back and sometimes comes apart into component parts that spin around each other in a dance similar to celestial orbits, but it has no center.
Every now and then, something different will briefly struggle to the surface of the Consumption or a cry will break past the roiling mass. In its long life, the Consumption have devoured even other Occultarum and fragments of these beings are still being slowly digested within the great beast.

Eternal Hunger

The Consumption has no agenda, no ulterior motives. It seeks to consume all that it encounters by corrupting all it touches into smaller copies of itself. Matter that come into contact with Consumption begin to degrade and transform, first in small black droplets with the same appearance as the spheres that make up its body. Eventually, as the corruption spreads these spheres grow larger and the process accelerates. When the Consumption comes near, these spheres fly towards the mass to join the greater whole.   Not even the Occultarum are safe from this, though they are harder to digest. There is no telling what will happen to any man or woman unfortunate enough to be touched by the Consumption, but it can't be good. Should it breach the shroud and coil around the world, there will be nothing left.
Sub-division of the Consumption   Like other Occultarum, the Consumption is capable of partitioning part of its essence into entirely new forms - part of the greater whole but independent at the same time. The Consumption rarely bother to do so, though it is anyone's guess if this is choice or lack of thought.   The only sub-division the Consumption does bother to spawn has been the Mawed Eye; a great, floating eye enclosed with teeth and fangs. The Mawed Eye travel the void, seeking things to devour. While it lacks the corruptive nature of its root-soul, it is more than capable of devouring lesser beings and celestial detritus.

The Occultarum

Cosmic-scavengers and void-maggots, the Occultarum are creatures from another plane of existence who have spent aeons gnawing on the bones of dead gods and dying stars. More concept then corporeal, the Occultarum are alien things that follow no natural laws. Ever since mankind unlocked the secret of magic, they have been drawn to this fresh new banquet.   Read more about the Occultarum

The Covenant

Not all Occultarum are so blind. Some have evolved from their feast on human souls and come to see the value in restraint, like a farmer who fattens his cattle. These Occultarum have formed a loose alliance, a Covenant, and they more than any other fear the Consumption for its arrival heralds a possible end to their project. Time will tell but in face of such terror, humanity's only hope for survival may lie with those who have feasted on them.   Read more about the Covenant

Area-5A-4

Unfortunately for mankind, the world has already seen errant spheres of the Consumption land on its soil. Weakened by the distances from the void and the shroud that separates Occultarum from the world of mankind, these spheres consume slowly.   In Area-5A-4, the Shinomas Magocracy watch these strange alien beings and study them. Even among the callous Magocracy, there are those who call for their immediate destruction, but the lure of turning these unknown things into weapon and to end the war have so far prevented it.

Loved this article Qurilion!

  • The opening paragraph hooks you right in immediately. There is a small typo in it, 'spawned in the avoid' I presume that should be void. The use of short sentences gives your prose here a really nice, sharp feeling to it, while building dread with the imagery you present.
  • Your headers are lovely, well worded, and the CSS is nice too. They give a hint of the content without giving everything away or being too boring. Sight of Consumption has a typo "Consumption no discernable" is missing a Has. The quote here is vaguely terrifying and really builds a bit of dread.
  • The use of quotation blocks breaks up the prose nicely. Some typos here; in Sub-divison of Consumption "guess is this" should be "if this". "Consumption does bother" should read "has bothered". The Mawed Eye sounds freaky, and I'd love to know more information about it.
  • Your use of the sidebar to provide information on the Occalarum and other additional info is really nice. It stops this being a wall of text, and feels like fun bonus content.
  • I'd really like to see more on the history of the Consumption's contact with reality. Notable victims? Notable touchdowns? Sightings? A first person quote from a victim or survivor could help build the horror perhaps. When was it first sighted by humans?

Thanks a ton for the read and the feedback! <3   I went through and fixed the typos and stuff. I'll definitely return to it later and maybe add some more about it, and about the stuff that goes on in Area-5A-4. :D

Eldritch Horror at it's finest! You draw the reader in quickly and hook them deep. I love the concept just as much as I hate it sooo soo much. This horrible thing crawling across space and time to end everything and it's slowly approaching humanity...   I think there could be a couple more links into the body of the text itself. There were a few times when I scanned the sidebar seeking it out. Area-5A-4 is great! Like any good analogue, do you have information on it and the other secrets it undoubtedly holds?!   If so, I'd love to see them! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks!   What kind of links? What articles were you thinking about?

You have truly mastered the use of the sidebar. I am envious. I think we might need to shrink the headers a bit, wouldn't you say? I'd love to know if there is a cult dedicated to this particular beasty. (probably the wrong term, but oh well).   I wish you wrote more obviously wrong things so I felt like my comment was helpful!

No cults yet, but some SCIENCE is being one on it.. And surely, that has never gone wrong before?   And yeah, the first header is pretty massive, looking back on it.. Hmmm.. Might have to change the title!   Thanks :D
