In conjunction with the tear opening in the sky, etherbeings suddenly become aggressive and start attacking mortals to consume their ether. The effects of this are so disasterous that mortals experience a near extinction-- the only ones to survive are those with little ether and no magic.   Violent and erratic etherbeings nearly drive mortals to extinction in just under one year. The only survivors were mortals with very little ether, making them less than ideal targets for etherbeings.
