United States of America
The US is a federal presidential constitutional republic of 49 states, with the head of state and government being an elected president that serves for a term of four years, with the possibility of more if they are re-elected. The president in 1962 is Richard Nixon, a Republican who is almost a year into his first term.
The United States suffered for their indecisiveness during the Second World War, leaving Great Britain to their fate. Most Americans simply lacked the will to fight an enemy overseas that posed no threat to them. While there were warning signs that the Japanese would invade, such threats never materialised. As such, the US resigned itself to the shipping of goods and weapons to its allies, who crumbled one after the other. The majority of the Free World is now found on the American continent, something the US has promised to defend to its dying day.
Other nations are content to leave the US to its own devices. Japan and Germany both have burgeoning empires and enough civil trouble as is. Its former ally, Great Britain, has resigned itself to an isolationist fate.
Nevertheless, crisis looms. American missiles placed on Hawaii are being challenged by new Japanese advances in technology (thanks in part to Germany): Intercontinental Ballistic Cruise Missiles are pointed at the mainland US from Vladivostok all the way down to the Philippines. While current Vice-President Kennedy has his work cut out for him in attempting a diplomatic solution, Congress has already green lit further nuclear developments and a bill to subsidise American made ICBMs.
