Caral Long Sparrow

T

his unusual sparrow has become the centre of communication within the New Realm. Named after the dragon folk of Caral, the bird attracted the folk for its unusual behavior and mating rituals.

Colour and Size

T

he Caral long sparrow is a small bird with black tail feathers. It has a long wing span that also has dark black feathers on the underside of the wings. The Caral long sparrow has a small curved beak that is brown with tints of bright orange.

The male birds have bright feathers of yellow and red. These colours are to attract the females. The females have top feathers that are grey and black.

Mating Rituals

C

aral long sparrows mate for life. The male attracts a female by building a nest for the female. The male takes great care in making the nest and can take up to a month to prepare it. Once he is ready, he sounds a mating call to attract a female. When a female is curious, she visits the nest to inspect the work. As she does this, the male puffs his chest and makes a thumping sound from his chest. He puffs his bright feathers and flutters them in the air. If the female does not like his nest, she flies away and other females visit. He continues to do this until he finds a female. Once he finds a female, she stays with him for life.

Nesting and Flock Behavior

O

nce the birds have mated, the males will stay in the nest and the females will leave to find food. The male will sit on the eggs and only leave if the female is present.

Caral long sparrows are sociable creatures. They live in flocks and will nest as a group. They have strong connections to each other.

Uses in Communication

B

ecause Caral long sparrows live in flocks, they are strong communicators. The females will fly long distances from flock to flock. This made them the natural choice to carry messages from city to city. The sparrows know instinctively where other nests are in the Realm. They often fly from nest to nest. As they arrive to a nest, they announce their arrival by screeching at a high pitch. This announces their arrival.
