Deep and dark down below,
where only fools and braggarts go,
where monster roam and dangers mortal,
few survive the Yawning Portal,
stand your ground or ring the bell,
and hope you make it up the well!

The Yawning Portal is perhaps the most famous tavern in Wittering. The four story high stone building has a slate roof, and its interior is clad in wood and decorated with blue banners. The most well-known feature is also its namesake: the top of an ancient tower that stands in the middle of the common room and leads into the first level of the Undercity. The Yawning Portal is the primary open way of entering the Undercity. The tavern is run by Durnan, an ex-adventurer.
Being hoisted down into the Undercity comes at the cost of one golden Dragon. Getting hoisted back up too comes at the cost of one golden Dragon. The patrons make a sport out of betting how long someone survives in the Undercity.
