Children in Vitgrud are divided into age-based cohorts. Everyone born between the half-year days ending two consecutive Trials of Life is part of the same fivespan. An individual's closest social ties are usually found in this group, as they will spend half a year depending on each other for survival, and choose their first spouses out of their number.
