Gorder's Arrest
Gorder's Arrest is the name given to the acute stage of keetrock poisoning, an occupational sickness caused by exposure to toxic concentrations of keetrock in the refineries on Aktergea. Its most serious consequence is complete kidney failure, requiring donor or artifical replacement.
Treatment
In addition to kidney replacement, patients often require treatment for the complications caused by kidney malfunction.
Affected Groups
Gorder's Arrest is most prevalent among refinery workers on the leeward side of Aktergea, in particular those who have an underlying history of kidney disease.
Prevention
To prevent the condition from reaching the stage of Gorder's Arrest, refinery workers are signed to quarter-years terms, and forbidden from working three consecutive terms. They are encouraged, though not forced, to have their urine analyzed in the middle of each term to check for the concentration. Drinking imported water also reduces the chances of acquiring Gorder's Arrest.
History
Gorder's Arrest was not identified as a specific hazard of keetwood mining until several hundred years after the industry's inception. Refinery workers tended not to stay for consecutive terms, and often the symptoms did not manifest immediately. Epidemiologists from Galtern began charting the condition's occurrence in 730 Vol, and identified the cause as keetrock contamination in local water sources. Since the refinery is on Aktergea's leeward slope, almost all the available surface water is in the river that flows directly from the volcano's crater lake and is rarely diluted by fresh rain.
