Basic Information
Ecology and Habitats
Graybacks thrive in cool to temperate climates.
Additional Information
Social Structure
They are strongly territorial. Because fighting is costly for both parties, an encounter between adult graybacks typically begins and ends with threat posturing, with the usual result that the intruder moves on quickly to another area.
Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
The grayback color pattern is darkest at the limbs and head, lighter on the belly and sides, and lightest on the back. Cubs are a uniform brown, with the shading appearing toward the end of their first year. The pattern itself can vary by season depending on latitude; grayback populations in the northern distribution often display a stark difference between their summer and winter coats, with the lighter-colored fur in winter extending down into the limbs.
