Rising Sun

The Rising Sun was a colony-class flagship in the service of the Exploratory Corps, the first such to be built since the Grand Adventure nearly 70 years earlier, and the first ever to be operated by an organization other than a tiderider family.  Although officially property of the Exploratory Corps, the captain Thassi Edusolga was acknowledged as owner and given liberty to design its colors and emblem.  The ship's first assignment was to lead an expedition looking for an island suspected to exist in the Vast Eastern Gap.  After Tokled was found where it was predicted, the Rising Sun carried the equipment and crew to establish an outpost.
The Rising Sun was destroyed in an act of sabotage while stationed at the Tokled outpost.  Three of the five crewmembers, including Thassi, died in the incident.

Power Generation

Unlike colony flagships of the Oceanic Era, the Rising Sun was equipped with the recently-developed lightning shield, a combination power supply, sensing device, and defensive mechanism.  It was developed from the lightning wheel, and is now commonly installed on boats of any size that may travel too far from inhabited islands to regularly recharge. The power storage banks take advantage of the ship's motion under sail to charge. In its passive state, the system maintains a low-voltage electric field around the ship's hull. The navigating computer detects changes to the field that can indicate nearby objects below the water line. In its active state, the system can build up a high-voltage charge to destroy or deflect projectiles with small bolts of lightning.

Propulsion

The Rising Sun was a sailing ship, with oars for maneuvering in calm weather or in shallow water.  Most unusually for a vessel built since 2000 Vol, it was not conduit-compatible.

Additional & auxiliary systems

Many of the Rising Sun's operational systems were automated, allowing the ship to be run by a much smaller crew.
