House Medani

Of all the dragonmarked houses, House Medani purposely keeps the lowest profile. When your services include risk assessment, interrogation, and protection, a low key approach is probably the best way to go. Through the Warning Guild, they contract jobs as bodyguards, investigators, and sentries to clients across Khorvaire. Their mark enhances their senses and provides powers of divination, which is used for protection and security to its clients.   House Medani bears the Mark of Detection and concerns itself primarily with investigation and counterintelligence. Unlike most Houses, Medani has a strong tie with the Kingdom of Breland, which is home to about 2/3rds of their marked heirs. Although the Warning Guild is less starkly divided, enjoying strong popularity in the Five Nations, Zilargo and the Mror Holds, most business comes through Sharn and there has been little success in less urban regions of Khorvaire.    Medani also maintains an enclave at Arythawn Keep in Southern Thrane, housing an organization known formally as the Mournlands Watch, but more commonly called the Thousand Yard Stare. Maintaining a small but dedicated group of heirs, they use their power to scout, divine and monitor the Mournlands and other unknown threats. Started from a group concerned about the Mournland's expansion, they have since branched off into investigation of other, equally unexplained dangers on Khorvaire.

History

The Medani half-elves originated in the provinces that were later united to Breland, descendants of the earliest elven migrants. Part human and part elf, they blended into both societies, and as the Mark of Detection manifested they opted to keep its powers quiet. As they secretly used their new powers to carve out a reputation and reliable bodyguards and investigators, the other dragonmarked suspected nothing. With very little interest in politics, or disclosing their abilities, the familes of khorovar went about their business with enormous success over the years.   During the War of the Mark, a Cannith heir discovered the Medani elves and their dragonmark. Initially believing it to be an enclave of aberrant marks, they investigated harshly, and were shocked to discover a final, twelfth dragonmark had been hidden for centuries. Wanting to consolidate the power of "true" marks - consistant, constructive, inherited - against aberrant marks - random, destructive, unpredictable - they invited the Medani to join as a full house. With no desire to grow in power beyond the lands of Breland, and not wanting to be involved in the infighting amongst the dragonmarked house, the various Medani families conferred, and promptly told them no. Not used to taking no for an answer, the houses unified in their approach and, after much negotiation, not so veiled threats, and a few strong-arm tactics, the half-elves relented, and House Medani was created.   Throughout the Last War, House Medani did nothing to ingratiate themselves with the other dragonmarked houses. The Medani heirs didn't care what the other houses thought, as they were loyal to Breland. Unlike the rest of the houses, who had to work covertly with the Five Nations in an attempt to keep up their appearances of neutrality, House Medani worked out in the open as the counter-intelligence arm of the Breland crown. While they never acted as spies for Breland, their primary business was discovering and apprehending spies and assassins from rival nations, and business was good. They were involved in various criminal investigations throughout the kingdom, and became commonly incorporated into the nation's law enforcement and espionage. This alliance between Medani and Breland still exists today, allowing the Medani heirs to have a subtle, but powerful, influence over matters of state.

Agriculture & Industry

House Medani offers simple security and business consultations at Warning Guild guildhalls for a modest consultation fee. This service includes one hour of questioning and advice from an expert on the consultation's topic and one portent from a Medani heir (often also the expert) applied toward the client's benefit. The locations of Medani private enclaves are kept secret from the public and never host consultations.   For a steeper daily fee, the Warning Guild can be contracted to solve a crime, search for plots, perform background checks or otherwise investigate on behalf of a client. This fee hires at least one inquisitive to work exclusively on the client's case, promises discretion about all inquiries and pays for any magical or nonmagical assistance required by the lead inquisitive on the case, including, if necessary, scrying and portents from a greater marked Medani. The discretion of the Warning Guild is limited by the letter and the spirit of the law: Inquisitives are required to report any crimes they uncover during their investigations to the proper authorities.   Finally, individual Marked Medani can be hired as bodyguards. This costs a moderate fee per day for a Least Medani protector and a larger, highly negotiable amount for those with more powerful marks. Lesser Medani can generally only be afforded by the nobility, and Greater and Siberys Medani generally cannot be hired as bodyguards for gold at all - their services to the inquisitives are simply too valuable to risk.
