King Boranel ir'Wynarn

His Majesty, King of Breland

The beloved king of Breland, and its ruler for the last 45 years. Boranel has outlived wives, children, dynasties and wars, and through it all maintained a reputation as a practical, down-to-earth ruler who holds the trust of the people.   King Boranel is the third son of Boranex ir'Wynarn, the previous King of Breland. He received a broad education with study in the arts of war, combat, history and language. As the third son of a relatively young, healthy king, Boranel never expected to rule, and so trained himself as a combat leader. He spent several years as a treasure hunter in Xen'drik, bringing back many personal relics and tremendous wealth for his country. Afterwards, he joined the military proper, and rising through the ranks, he quickly developed a reputation as an extremely competant general and fighter, given the nickname of "The Bear". Among others, he is remembered for leading six major engagements, holding the bridge at Brey Crossing alongside his warforged bodyguard, Three, and personally defeating an ogre in single combat to buy time for refugees fleeing Droaam.   In YK 961, tragedy struck. Across two different battlefields with Cyre and Thrane, Boranel's two older brothers died within two days of each other. As the news reached his father, so did the criticism of King Boranex's leadership and tactics, and Boranex took his own life. Suddenly set to inherit the throne, Boranel was recalled to Wroat, reorganized his life, and took the crown later that year.   Boranel studied with some of the finest weaponmasters on Khorvaire, including an elven Valenar woman named Eliri who taught him how to ride and fight on horseback. Eliri was the first love of Boranel’s life, but between their age gap and his responsibilities, it was doomed to fail. Boranel soon married Lady Chaaseva ir'Maasat, a noble from Cyre, in a scandalous romance across enemy lines. Eventually, his happiness came to an end when his Queen was murdered by parties unknown, her assassins never identified. Rumour blames Cyran nobles punishing her for defecting to Breland, or Droaam's hag coven, but a sizeable bounty remains. Afterwards, Boranel twice remarried, and after disease and old age has now outlived three wives, while having eleven children between them.   Today, Boranel does his best to maintain his health, but after assassination attempts, decades of war, and the effects of age, his health is on the decline. Between his far less popular children and power grabs from the Brelish parliament, it is unclear who - if anyone - will succeed him.

Social

Family Ties

Boranel has had six sons and five daughters across three marriages, who range from 20 to 50 years old. His younger brother, Kole ir'Wynarn, runs the King's Citadel, while he has three younger sisters. Notably, Crown Prince Borkan, his eldest, is the Royal Steward in charge of the crowns finances - viewed as responsible but boring, and resented by many Brelish in his role as a tax collector. Among his other children, Prince Boramil perished at the Battle of Marguul Pass, killed by the armies of Darguun, and Princess Boran died leading an army into Cyre on the Day of Mourning. Prince Halix and Princess Borina are in Karrnath, traded for Kaius's sister Haydith as peace insurance after the Treaty of Thronehold.   Prince Brask, one of his youngest, works to represent the crown to the many noble families in Sharn, Princess Shyrra is a talented fighter currently adventuring in Xen'drik and the Mournland, Prince Aejar works with Morgrave University, and Princess Larina acts as an ambassador to Zilargo.
