Rekkenmark

More than any other city in the Five Nations, Rekkenmark was the front line of the war. Living on a war footing or outright siege for the majority of the Last War, the city has fallen and been retaken, has been ruined and rebuilt, and the scars are nowhere near healed. Across the Scion's Sound is Thaliost, its bitter rival, and the site of a hundred attacks from Aundair and Thrane over the years. A tour of the city shows where ring walls had fallen after naval attacks, neighborhoods had been destroyed and been rebuilt after firebombings, and markets still show damage from urban warfare. But still, the people of Rekkenmark have enormous pride in their city, and claim to be true survivors more than any other.   It is noteworthy as the location of the Rekkenmark Academy, founded by Galifar I's oldest son over 1,000 years ago. It stands alone as the finest academy of military science, combat arts and politics in the Nations, and produces the elite of Karrnath's officer corp. Since the end of the war, it has opened its doors to other nations as a gesture of peace, and is soon to produce its first foreign graduates. Among them is Halix ir'Wynarn, youngest son of King Boranel of Breland.    The city also holds one end of the famous White Arch Bridge - a monumental construction that spanned the 20km wide Scion's Sound at its narrowest point, and was once the main connection between east and west Khorvaire. The bridge was destroyed early during the war, first by Aundair, to prevent a Karrnathi attack. It was rebuilt by Thrane to enable a siege of Rekkenmark, only to be destroyed again by Karrnath - and since, its centre has lain in ruins. Together with Cyre falling to become the Mournlands, the loss of the bridge has left no land route between the halves of Khorvaire.
