The Fracturing of Magic
Dear Timothy,
You recently asked for more details about the fracturing of magic, so let me tell you what I know.
The first part of what the history books say is true. The people of Svene came from four different planets in the Frist system--Nideon, Iyuth, Qwen, and Milon. Milon was the first inhabited planet, and the people of this planet later colonized the others. The magical atmosphere of Milon allows for very little magic to occur, and the people of this planet grew very superstitious of it, even committing atrocities on those who had gifts. The magical atmosphere of Qwen allowed even less magic. Fortunately, this resulted in the widespread belief that magic was mere myth. On Nideon and Iyuth, however, magic was far more common, and as such the colonies there quickly cut ties with their home planet.
The Great Magic War likely started with some foolish astronomers on Nideon who believed they could find the planet they had once lived on. They eventually did, and, as the first colonists had feared, the people of the homeworld were none too happy about magic running rampant on their home colony. Soon Iyuth and Qwen got involved, as well as factions on individual planets causing problems, and boom, interplanetary war.
Some of the people from Iyuth and Qwen tried to escape by getting out of the system entirely, which worked for a shirt while, until the people of Milon and Qwen found us. Thus, the people of our planet are descended from people throughout the Frist system, including, you may be surprised to know, people who had been so transformed by magic they weren't considered human anymore. I don't mean this in a bad way. I just mean there's a reason the Tenganaw language could be traced back to the old Mermish tongue of Nideon. That is, if anyone outside my family had the information required to do such tracing.
Anyway, a group of people--some humans, some others, all of them magic workers--made a last stand at the Vina Outpost. The loss of that battle basically ensured that the non-magical side would win the war. So a group of rebels went into hiding made a plan. They determined the best way to keep their magic traditions alive was to break apart and teach them to different groups, especially considering so many of their traditions had been lost already. And thus, the twelve magical factions were born, kept in secret from one another and outsiders, in the hope that might one day reunite. My ancestor, Haley, founder of the Seers, was among the group. I have also traced back the Shadowcasters to Miep Atlam, a sort of Mistwalker in her own right, and the Foxes to Penelope Fox. This is ironic because the Foxes no longer allow women to practice. Imagine if they knew their founder was a woman!
I hope this is helpful to you, and that you may be able to add to it from your own collection.
Sincerely,
Flourine
Head Mistwalker of the Seers
The cover image helps with understanding this. There's obviously a bunch more to the story. Nice work.
Yeah. This is essentially the premise of the world. I have a couple of major stories I'm developing that take place here, and one is a sort of "prequel," where I will get to flesh out exactly what happened during the Great Magic War.
I look forward to reading more of your work!
