Lycanthropy is a magical condition that causes those inflicted by it to suffer mutations. Those who have been infected with lycanthropy are known as lycanthropes or werewolves.
Details
The disease is passed by blood transference with the primary means being by a bite from a lycanthrope in either their wolf or hybrid form. While those bitten and inflicted maintain their personalities and independence, they are still beholden to what they call the "wolf's curse". On a full moon, they are forced into their wolf form until the night is over.
Lycanthropy is characterized by the ability to change into multiple forms:
- Normal - The inflicted's regular form.
- Wolf - The inflicted shapeshifts into the form of a large wolf. When transformed in this way, the inflicted appears to not maintain their personality traits.
- Hybrid - The inflicted transforms into a large, bipedal, humanoid wolf form. Generally they are larger, stronger, and more fierce than they are in their normal form.
History
Lycanthropy's origins are unknown. Throughout history, stories and rumors of lycanthropy existed, but generally were considered myth until the Kingdom of Galifar. With a united, civilized society, those stories became reports and lycanthropy was recognized as a notable disease. Eventually, treatments were developed and though they didn't reverse the effects of the disease, they made it easier to live with.
Crusade of Silver
In 832 YK, the
Church of the Silver Flame announced the Crusade of Silver, a church-sanctioned eradication of the lycanthrope disease. During the 7th century, lycanthrope had spread through the lower classes in Khorvaire, but had become fairly well-managed. Despite this, attacks did still occur. While many people supported the church's desire to stop the spread of the disease, the church's response has become a black spot in their history.
In a night that has come to be known as the Night of the Bloody Moon, the church sent Templars aided by Torchbearer information to kill every known werewolf instead of attempting to cure them. The slaughter killed more than 50,000 in a single night. The church, despite backlash, spent the next 3 years hunting down the remaining infected people before declaring in 835 YK that the crusade had ended and that lycanthrope had been eradicated from Khorvaire for good.
Campaign
Session 6: Moonlight on the Vine
While searching for the mythical Dragonshard Skull, the Phaeros Foundation met a brother of the church named
Brother Essex. The Foundation was attacked by two Shadow Operatives. Essex tried to buy the Foundation time to escape by revealing that he is a werewolf, shifting into his hybrid form to combat the Operatives.
Session 9: Street of Skulls
Essex took time to further explain his origins, telling the Phaeros Foundation that he was bred to be a werewolf. Thrane did not wipe out all of the lycanthropes during the Crusade of Silver, opting to instead capture the strongest ones for their own uses. During the Last War, Thrane utilized an all-werewolf troupe, the 66th Infantry, as a silent-ops unit sent in to clean up messy situations and leave none alive. Of the original 20 members of the 66th, only 9 now survive including Essex.
Session 10: The True Flame
When Marcella revealed that she fought in the famed Siege of Thaliost, Essex asked how she got out alive. He then revealed that the 66th was also deployed in the siege and it was a decisive victory for Thrane.
