Session 30: The Secrets of Making

General Summary

Our intrepid heroes found themselves in the city of Making deep within the Mournlands. There, they decided to forgo any exploration of the rest of the city and to focus their efforts on the House Cannith Headquarters located in a massive underground tower. The city surrounding the tower had some strange anomalies: the city was still fully-powered but abandoned. On top of this, past the House Cannith Headquarter in the deep recesses of the city, a thick mist had sunk to the ground and was actually glowing. After some initial struggle to enter the employees entrance, the Foundation was granted access to the sublevels thanks to Mila’s House Vol dragonmark.   They started their search for information on Sublevel 3, where they were asked to recover a project binder for Tarkov, a House Cannith artificer living in New Cyre. They found a room at the end of a hallway that was unlocked, inside was an office and workshop that they investigated thoroughly. There, they found the binder, which Bal confirmed was a House Cannith project binder with the following title: “HC Project ML21: Arcane Engine V.3”.   Along with the binder, they found 250cr worth of Eberron dragonshards in the workshop nearby a large, mechanical object that looked a lot like the construct that Tarkov had been working on back in New Cyre. The turbine-like machine had 12 dragonshards embedded in the top and an inlaid glass panel. The entire machine was plugged into the wall via a panel and, judging from the rest of the building and the city surrounding, it seemed the engine should be powered.   Mila once again used her dragonmark to turn on the engine. As soon as the turbine began to spin, mist spilled forth from it, mist that looked identical to the Mourning. Bal attempted to break one of the dragonshards to shut the machine off and Vax stood nearby to ensure Bal got out of the room safely. Before Bal could break the shard, the mist began to almost attack those in the office. Mila, Rasp, and Jin left the room and Mila, with Vax’s encouragement, shut the door to contain the mist. After Bal broke a dragonshard, the engine became unstable and overclocked, causing a massive wave of damage. Vax grabbed Bal and used dimension door to teleport them to the safety of the hallway.   In the hall, the Foundation took some time to rest and think about what they had discovered: a machine constructed by House Cannith produced the same mist that became the Mourning. They then decided to head down to the floors below, with Mila knowing the lower floors to be more restricted than the others. On Sub-level 4, they found a very similar hallway with a storage room at the end. Inside, they stocked up on various items of use, including Mila making her way into a dragonshard storage area blocked by arcane barriers and retrieving 10,000 cr worth of dragonshards. Jin also picked up an immovable rod and a driftglobe, although they weren’t sure exactly what they were.   Finally, they moved down to two large, metallic double-doors at the bottom of the stairs that led to sub-level 5. Mila opened the doors and glowing mist began to pour out. Inside, she glimpsed a single, large room, mist that only went up to thigh level, and arcane barrier pens that seemed to have people inside of them. The Foundation formed a plan: Vax would use his ring of flying to fly into S5 and survey the area. Mila would open and close the door for Vax as he came and went and take the damage the mist caused.   They executed on their plan and Vax began to fly above the mist of sub-level 5. Inside, he found a room the size of an airplane hangar with many pens blocked off by arcane barriers. Inside were prisoners of war, undead Karrn soldiers separated by rank. The end of the massive room was open to the city beyond, but protected by an arcane barrier. The mist poured through and was charged by arcane pumps below. Finally, Vax got close to one of the large pens near the open end of the room. Inside, he saw a general of the Karrn military who noticed Vax and looked up at him before uttering, “Kill me.”
