Dark Eyes - Thieves Guild

Guild Structure

The Darkeyes Thieves' Guild operates in a structured manner that resembles a hierarchical web. The guild is led by the mysterious figure known as the Nightmask, and beneath them are the Shadowhands, who act as the guild's lieutenants and manage various operations within the guild. Under the Shadowhands are the Footpads, the rank and file of the guild who execute the bulk of the operations. New members are initiated as Shadows, where they prove their worth before being promoted to Footpads.

"Within the veiled alleys of Eastdale and the whispers of the night, lie secrets only the shadows can keep. Trust not the light that reveals, but the darkness that conceals."
— Nightmask, Leader of the Darkeyes Thieves' Guild

Guild Motivations and Goals

The primary motivation of the Darkeyes is power and control over Eastdale's underbelly. They exploit the stringent restrictions of the Red Laws to offer black market services, creating a thriving underworld economy. Their long-term goal is to extend their influence over the local political and economic systems, manipulating them to their benefit.

Influential Members

  • Nightmask (Unknown): The elusive leader of the Darkeyes. Their identity is a closely guarded secret, and only a select few in the guild have ever met them in person.
  • Cedric the Sly (Human Thief) A Shadowhand who manages the day-to-day operations of the guild. He is a master of disguise and is known for his cunning strategies. He often serves as a quest giver for the Footpads.
  • Mira Darktunnel (Dwarf Thief): A veteran member of the guild who is in charge of maintaining the guild's hideout and the security of the sewer system. She also trains new recruits.
  • Delara Swiftshadow (Elf Assassin): Delara is the head enforcer of the guild. Her tasks involve disciplining disloyal members and eliminating threats to the guild. Her reputation is enough to keep most members in line.

Adaptation to Eastdale's Environment

The Darkeyes Thieves’ Guild has adeptly adapted to the unique challenges and opportunities presented by Eastdale. The stringent Red Laws have created a lucrative black market, which the Darkeyes exploit skillfully. They operate in the shadows, capitalizing on the dissatisfaction and restrictions the populace faces due to the Red Laws.

Interactions with Local Entities

  • The Church of St. Ygg While publicly upholding the Red Laws, some members of the Church may secretly utilize the services of the Darkeyes for less-than-holy activities. This hypocritical relationship adds a layer of complexity and intrigue to the guild's operations.
  • The Red Bannermen The guild is in a constant game of cat and mouse with the Red Bannermen. Evading these zealous enforcers of the Red Laws is a daily challenge for the guild members.
  • Local Businesses: Establishments like The Saucy Tart serve as critical nodes in the guild's intelligence network. The tavern's owner, Blackburn, may unwittingly (or wittingly) provide shelter and a meeting place for the guild members. Influence on Eastdale's Society and Politics
The guild's influence extends beyond mere criminal activities. They are gradually embedding themselves into the political and economic fabric of Eastdale, exerting control and influence where they can. Their long-term goal might involve installing sympathetic figures in positions of power or blackmailing key officials to act in the guild's favor.

Guild Activities and Operations

  • Black Market Operations: Circumventing the Red Laws to provide prohibited goods like Corn Whisky, gambling, and other illicit entertainments.
  • Information Trading: Acting as collectors and purveyors of secrets, they sell information to the highest bidder, be it political, economic, or personal.
  • Espionage and Surveillance: Keeping tabs on significant figures in Eastdale, including members of the Church, the Red Bannermen, and influential merchants.

Guild's Reputation Among the Populace

While feared and respected in the criminal underworld, the guild might also be seen as a necessary evil by the common folk, providing services and goods otherwise unattainable due to the Red Laws. Their role in the daily life of Eastdale's citizens is ambiguous, ranging from saviors to opportunists.

Guild's Long-Term Aspirations

Their ultimate goal might not just be control over Eastdale's underbelly, but to challenge the very power structures that dominate the town, particularly the stranglehold of the Church of St. Ygg. This ambition sets the stage for potential uprisings, covert political maneuvers, and alliances with other dissenting factions within the town.
