The Day of Red Sands

The Day of Red Sands is the name given to the brutal skirmish between The Holdfast Union and the Golden Host during the The Djeran Expansion War . The Holdfast Union sought to capitalize on the insurrection underway in Odjerai, and the fragmenting of the Golden Host. The Djeran Highway, the main road that skirts around the base of the Djeran Mountains, was the most direct route to the capital, but was heavily fortified and proved to be a significant obstacle for the Union forces that marched into the Sultanate. A battalion of Union soldiers attempted to bypass this route entirely by cutting through the Djeris Desert, trying to avoid the bulk of the Golden Host that patrolled the Djeran Highway. The Union underestimated the difficulty of navigating the sands, as well as the belligerence of the native Thri-Kreen tribes. The trek through the desert became its own war of attrition against the sands themselves, with many Union soldiers dying before they ever entered combat. When the Golden Host discovered this trespassing force, the Union soldiers' numbers were already severely diminished and, despite putting up an intense fight, stood no chance against combined strength of Odjerai soldiers and Thri-Kreen warriors.
Total casualties are unknown, as the Union dead were never recovered and no survivors were ever found.
Despite the tremendous loss the Day of Red Sands was a significant point in the war as it weakened the Golden Host's grip on Odjerai and allowed insurrectionist forces within the city to gain a foothold.
