Archai
An ancient empire that existed in the area surrounding the bay where the Isle of Ash is located. The Island was the capital of the empire that lasted for nigh on a thousand years.
Structure
Throughout the centuries of the nations, multiple structures of power existed.
In the first years of the nation, the people only occupied an island now called the Isle of Ash. The island was divided into twelve slices, meeting in the centre, each named for a different deity. Every 2 years, each of these slices would democratically elect one representative.
History
There were 4 major eras of the empire, which were largely defined by their different power structures.
In the first of the four eras, the powers that be were largely democratic. With a strong elected government and lucrative trade taxed by the government, the population of the home island grew beyond capacity, forcing families to settle in the lands surrounding the Mibr Bay. They brought with them their culture, laws, and other practices, slowly taking over the lands they settled in. When the peoples of these lands relized what was happening, many banded together to drive the Archaians back into the sea. At this time Archai had no formal military and no historical experience with warfare, but with no room left on the mainland for their ever growing population, the government was forced to raise an army to protect their settlers.
In time, a decendant of this first general became the first Grand Vizier, who slowly transitioned the growing empire into an autocracy.
