Luanshi
Arriving in the town of Teichi as a young orphan with an uncertain past, Luanshi lived as a street urchin for the first few months of his new life. After Master Xi of the nearby temple took pity on him, Luanshi was taken in and given an education. While a restless and free spirited individual who tend to prefer the bustle of the town over the serious training regimes of the temple, he nonetheless owes a debt to Master Xi and will always return to continue his training. He's an outgoing individual and a show off, vying for the attention of others.
Now a young adult, he's come to work as a mail man, travelling quickly between towns throughout the nearby region. While often friendly, his rebellious streak has intensified, which may yet get him into trouble.

Personal history
A nameless child arrived in the town of Teichi by horse carriage, coming from a past of uncertainty and turmoil. With no one to care for him, he came to live life as a street urchin. He spent these first few months surviving by taking from others and sleeping below the town's bridge for shelter. His days were often spent finding means of survival, exploring his new home, and enjoying the arts of music and storytelling by the pond.
One day, a chance encounter with a man he only knew as 'Nobody' gave him his first opportunity to earn money - a simple delivery to the town's temple. While entering the temple proved difficult for the boy that couldn't count his knocks, he soon met with a man inside. He was Master Xi and he took pity on the child. As the kid was offered to be taken in by the temple, he quickly accepted.
The kid was taken in as a pupil, and would receive shelter, food and currency as long as he would undertake the temple's education. Initially this consisted of chores and meditation sessions, of which the restless kid had difficulty with. His peers at the temple did not seem to have as much need for fun in their routine as he did. He came to enjoy his times of leisure outside the temple, but knew he should try to repay his debt to Master Xi by continuing his training.
Over time the kid acclimated to his new life in the temple. He learned how to meditate, channel aether, and practice basic martial arts. He was also taught how to read, count and do basic calculations. While remaining a free spirit at heart, enjoying the arts by the pond and traversing rooftops out in town, he continued his training with the aspiration of proving himself deserving of a better life. His repeated persistence during his training earned him the nickname of 'Luanshi' (Pebble), which ended up sticking around.
Over many years he came to know the town of Teichi by heart. He's an outgoing individual with friends in and outside the temple. He's a show off, vying for the attention of others. He values his independence, but also seeks to continue to repay his debt to Master Xi by proving himself worthy of one day meeting up with the temple's spirit guardian.
Nearing his twenties, Luanshi became involved in the disappearance of Teichi. Believing the encroaching Empire to have malicious intentions in arriving to the town, he and a companion - Hana, the daughter of a Shrine Keeper - sought out the local Fox Spirit to plead for assistance. The Fox Spirit - actually a stranded Minian named Faerus - reluctantly lent her assistance by hiding the town from this plain of existence. This would buy time for Luanshi and Hana to seek out alliances, and contend with the Empire that way. For the first time in many years, Luanshi and Hana ventured outside of their town to look for kindred souls.
Luanshi and Hana went from town to town, meeting various individuals along the way. It soon became clear that the Empire was a divisive subject, with many believing there was no issue with their presence. Despite Luanshi and Hana's efforts, their search for allies turned up little. Over time, Luanshi and Hana's already rough relationship became further strained at this time. Along the way, Luanshi also met with two eccentric children, who would later go on to become martial nemeses of sorts for Luanshi.
Their journey eventually took them to the town of Koichi, located high atop a mountain. Here they paid a visit to the Scholar's Sect to learn more of the situation in the world. To their regret, Luanshi and Hana learned that the Empire's main interest was to reveal the truth of the spirits, and to end the worship of them on Eteras Medius. The journey was, in the end, a bit of a waste as Teichi was never in danger.
Luanshi was quick to return back to Teichi to conduct the dispelling ritual he had been taught by Faerus. Teichi was returned to normal, to Luanshi's great elation. The Empire would eventually arrive at the town, where a relatively peaceful discussion occurred on the nature of the world's spirits. After a personal visit from Faerus, who declared her indifference to the worship, the faith in the Fox Spirit soon faded from the local populace.
In his mid-twenties, Luanshi has grown into an independent young man. Working as a mail man, travelling the world has become a part of everyday life for him. He's now been able to discern his past more clearly.
Caerean, the Owl Spirit, was worshipped in his childhood town of Tori no Machi. Taking a far more prominent role in local affairs, with her own troop of guards, she was an important figure. As the Empire arrived in their attempt to tell the truth of Caerean's Minian heritage, she made the decision to sacrifice the entirety of the town while she herself escaped to a place unknown. Luanshi himself, only a child, had only barely escaped the terrible spell that consumed the town due to the presence of a famous hero. Hana's Father had shielded Luanshi from the great explosion. While her father had survived, some manner of corrupting influence resulting from the blast would eventually be his end. Not long after Hana's father had placed the young boy on a carriage, the warrior would perish from the corruption that took root inside of him.
Luanshi's experiences led to certain attitude problems to develop. Having seen the truth of the spirits, learned of the true nature of the world, and experienced less than kind treatment from individuals he's encountered, he's come to view respect as something not to give out blindly. His ideals of independence, now mixed with the idea of respect - in his eyes - having to earned, has formed a personality that at times borders on abrasive. Selectively choosing to forego decorum, it's not too uncommon that he becomes at odds with the cultural expectations around him. Despite the advice of those around him, he seems to struggle to learn his lesson in this regard.

Taboos
A bad habit that never quite left him from his time as a street urchin was the tendency towards taking things that aren't his. Itchy fingers give him a tendency to pocket things he sees that might have some value — or even things he's simply taken a liking to. He figures that it's not stealing if he needs it more than somebody else. However, he does not completely lack a sense of fairness — he will never target those who can't afford to lose a few coins.
Luanshi is drawn to money, seeing it as a direct way of improving his own lot in life. He might do just about anything for more of it.
