Gates/Portals

Gates/Portals – Manmade means of accessing other realms.
Gates are the stationary, and for all intents and purposes, permanent wounds of the realm. Being the only permanent and controllable manner of accessing another realm, gates are often controlled by a regional government, or private holder with extreme security. Most conventional civilians never get the opportunity to see a gate. Due to the essential, but scarce nature of such devices, they are often regulated, leveraged as political means and carry heavy levies for use even while serving the political goals of the holder.
Portals are temporary means to access another realm, controlled by an adept wielder of magicka that can glimpse into madness and have some understanding of how it flows in space. Portals are not as safe, and often can be more expensive than using a gate. The ability to bypass laws and political systems entice sorcerers to learn the secrets of transcending realms. However, many regional governments ban and highly enforce the regulation of such magick because, calling a portal into existence stirs the veil of madness, shifting reality. Or, the loss of control over the movement of goods/people/funds motivates governments to act.
