The Convergence

Close worlds brought even closer, with a price few were willing to say.

I remember that my master was speaking to several colleagues at the time, discussing what I'll never know. They were worried, pouring over maps and books, looking for something in them. I know the exact moment the [Convergence] hit our city, for I can never get their screams out of my head.

The Convergence is the single-most devastating event to happen to the Realms. It is the cumulation of centuries of work by the people of the Final Realm, resulting in the Realms being closed off from their worlds and connected by portals.

Causes

The Convergence came as a surprise to all the Realms. At the time, the Final Realm was not connected to the other thirteen so knowledge of their work is nonexistent and can only be put together from clues left over. For what historians can tell, it was an experiment, a test not meant to do anything. What was being tested we can only hypothesize. Something, however, went wrong. Whether it was a accident, intentional sabotage or some other action, it resulted in destruction on a scale never seen before or after.

The Event

The Convergence itself was chaotic. Many records of the time have been lost, the chaos afterwards even more destructive. The most powerful felt it first, the waves of magic ripping through the air and tearing the land asunder. Their pain was a sign, their screams rent the air as the Void consumed connections and magic alike.   From there it spread. Those who were unable to take the pain found death a sweet relief, while those who lived suffered for the rest of their lives. Not only were the Realms cut off, taken to a mere fragment of themselves, but the land itself changed, warping under the strain.    In the Demon Realm, volcanos once dormant began to rumble. The Mer Realm found that the creatures of the deep that were once thought defeated emerged once more. Old beasts stalked the jungles of the Troll Realm while tunnels of the Goblin Realm crumbled and cracked. The floating islands of the Angel Realm lowered and moved while the Phoenixan's eternal flame went out.

The Aftermath

It was mere hours for the Convergence, but the effects were felt for years. The Mers had to restructure their government, only one member of the royal family surviving. The Demons had a crisis with their three major volcanos, and the Goblins forced to settle in the dangerous aboveground while the tunnels were strengthened.
