Cultural Traits: Rain-Fed Hills

Farmers from the nearby town tend to the tiered rice paddies that mark the landscape in waves. In the outskirts of the town, as fat raindrops begin to fall from the dark, cloudy sky, a young tiefling woman practices shooting a longbow, her arrow striking the bullseye. Down the main road, a restaurant comes alive with the sound of conversation, laughter, and the clinking of utensils and plates. In the kitchen, a halfling chef sautés freshly harvested ingredients in a large pan.   The traits you gain from growing up in a rain-fed hill environment are:
  • Your Charisma or Dexterity increases by one.
  • You gain proficiency with the longbow, hand crossbow, sickle, and scythe.
  • You gain proficiency with one of the following: brewer's supplies, cook's utensils, leatherworker's tools, or weaver's tools.
  • You gain proficiency with one of the following: Deception, Intimidation, Performance, or Persuasion.
Large urban cities and small rural settlements found in the rain-fed hills of Taifar are often centers of food and agriculture. You may be a merchant selling tea that you have brewed from leaves freshly picked from north of town, or a farmer coming into the city to sell their newly harvested produce. Because of all the business you do, you would have a high Charisma. Or perhaps you are a worker cutting down wheat in the fields with the blade of your scythe, or a farmer keeping watch over your flock of animals, your bow at the ready. In that case, your Dexterity is your forte.   In this terrain, longbows, hand crossbows, sickles, and scythes are the weapons of choice. This may be to defend oneself against thieves or to aid in the work you do in the field. Either way, you are familiar with these weapons and are considered proficient with them. Moreover, growing up you have learned some sort of trade or craft related to the type of product you harvest or sell and are proficient with either brewer's supplies, cook's utensils, leatherworker's tools, or weaver's tools. Given that you likely have to sell your products, barter for goods, or offer a service on the regular, you have proficiency in one of the following: Deception, Intimidation, Performance, or Persuasion.
