The Prismatic Moon
The Moon that lights the night sky of the Riftgrounds is bright and mysterious, changing color every few nights to cast a different hue across the world. for most, the moon is simply a pretty sight in the night sky, a light to guide them in the hours when the Sun is dimmed. But for wizards, and other practitioners of the arcane, it holds a far deeper purpose.
What many do not know about the orb that light their sky, is that the moon is actually a portal to another realm, resting high above the world. The realm of Aterius, the realm from which the arcane energy that permeates the world originates. While many spellcasters perform their magic simply using this latent energy, without directly calling it from the moon, others are able to tap into the power of Aterius more directly, calling up magic with greater power or ease based on the phase of the moon.
The colors the moon gives off, referred to as its phases, each correspond to a different school of magic: red for evocation, white of adjuration, green for illusion, purple for conjuration, yellow for divination, black for necromancy, blue for transmutation, and pink for enchantment.
Beyond tapping enough the moon's magic to cast powerful spells, some particularly powerful magic items have been created on a bright night when the moon's phase matched the school of magic being instilled into the item. This is particularly true during moonsurges, rare event in which the moon shines extra brightly, and releases far more of its power than normal into the Riftgrounds below. According to legend, some of the most powerful items of old, perhaps even some of the artifacts, were created during such moonsurges.
Of all the cultures in the Riftgrounds, the Arcane Elves, even sometimes referred to as Moon Elves, hold the moon in the most significance. Many of their homes have skylights to let in its glow, and they tend to live on mountains or other high-up places to be as close to it and the arcane energies it gives off as possible.
