The Scale Test

There is an old fable that has persisted for many years among some of the moer superstitious folk in Vast believed by some to be a way to find one's true love. The fable goes that if one takes a scale from a drake and keeps it on their person, somewhere close to their heart, after keeping the scale with them for at least one season, the scale will hold a special connection to their soul.   After this bond is formed, the holder of the scale is said to need to check the birthmarks of potential suitors they meet. If they have a birthmark that matches the bonded scale, then that person is said to be their perfect match.   While there is extremely little factual evidence to support this idea, or that drake scales hold any kind of magic that could make such a thing possible, it retains some amount of popularity still. This is likely due, at least in part, to some of the tales that exist of famous romances having begun this way. And while some are indeed verified to be historically accurate in having begun this way, many simply believe this to be a result of happenstance, it is enough to help preserve the old fable.   It even makes an appearance in the novel The Wanderer, though only as a suggestion made by the main character's mother as a way of settling down, and is presented in the novel as a quite silly notion.   This novel has helped knowledge of the fable spread outside of its place of origin, but it still holds little actual belief outside of Vast. Even if it did, the comparative rarity of drakes in much of the rest of the world would make it of little actual use. Despite being dangerous foes, drake scales are relatively easy to come by in Vast, and this fable may have serves as a boon to their monetary value in the region.
