Deities and Religion in Awsranka
The pantheon in Awsranka is an echo of the pantheon of Faerun circa 1357 DR. Naturally there are various distortions, but in the main, the lore from standard sources is applicable to the echo we find ourselves in. As in every world, different cities often develope a particular blend of religions and theology which evolved over time in response to local needs and ambitions. A comprehensive article would be exhausting both for me to write and for you to read, so I'll just summerize the situation in our starting town, Grytack.
Gods with public established worship in Grytack and its surrounding area
Eldath, goddess of peace.
In Awsranka, a traveler from Faerun would be surprised to find stone temples, large ones even, dedicated to the goddess, and attended by a majority of the population. Eldath’s cult was the state religion of the Red Empire, and even after the empire fell, the veneration of Eldath continued. Currently the church is dominated by the Stillwater priests and their doctrines. Grytack is no exception. The main temple on Victory square is primarily dedicated to Eldath. There are only two full time priests in Grytack, both of Eldath’s Stillwaters.
Chauntea, goddess of agriculture
Awsranka is a large region with an economy largely dependent on agriculture. Naturally, the Great Mother is honored here. There are temples dedicated to her, and many of the ranches and village granges have shrines dedicated to her veneration. In Grytack, Chauntea is honored at a shrine next to Eldath’s Temple on the east. One wonders if both goddesses find this a bit awkward.
Waukeen, goddess of trade
Trade is the lifeblood of nations, and the Free Cities of Awsranka are no exception. Traditionally, the main corridor of trade has been the great Miskafiska River, which flows from two tributaries joining at the Cosmopolitan city of Mosfellsbaer, and flows west to the Mother of all Oceans. Recently, the caravan route from Vantage to Neverwinter has become a vital trade link, as an infestation of Kraken has cut off traffic in the Dagger inlet. A shrine to Waukeen was raised shortly after the elevation of the caravan route, about the same time that the Cloud Kingdom Llama Caravans began offering their services. It is located next to Eldath’s temple on the west side.
lmater, god of endurance
A small temple is located on the campus of the Gwenllian Academy of Arts and Magic. The temple is also a pilgramage site, as it is dedicated to the newly cannonized Saint Gwen Dragonsbane, aka Gwen Lillycaller. The faculty at the Academy are all members of the Society of Saint Gwen Dragonsbane (SSGD).
Lliira, goddess of joy
A small roadside shrine in the fairgrounds district of Grytack is maintained by local residents. There is no fulltime priest, but a few residents serve as part time acolytes.
Oghma, god of knowledge
A small shrine in Gnarwaadam Hall is maintained by a group of students who honor the Lord of Knowledge. A few grad students serve as acolytes.
