Sciences and Technology in the Ring of Fire and Dragons
While this world is an echo of the material plane we know of as "Earth", there is one really significant difference that will cause science and technical innovation to diverge wildly; MAGIC EXISTS.
In Awsranka, when the Red Empire fell, the enforced philosophical and intellectual status quo was abandoned. Thinkers, both academic and priestly, started questioning the theories and worldview handed to them by ancient authority (yup, I'm talking to you Pliney the Elder). And sure, this part of the world may not have had access to all the greek classics, but the mood of questioning is there. In this world, the printing press with movable type (a la Gutenberg) was developed in the late 14th century. (the inventor perished in a disaster at the gray monastery). So people are more likely to be literate. Researchers are exchanging and printing ideas. Local Broadsheets regarding news and events are popular and common. Books are starting to come down in price. Universities are flourishing. Debates are ... vigourous. Theology and Mathematics are highly respected fields.
This emerging scholarship and development of scientific method both utilized and examined... magic.
How would that make things different?
The possibilities are endless, and certianly not exhausted by my own imagination. I invite you to join me in developing the "what ifs" and make our little geek hearts dance with joy!
