What you will need to know...

Character Creation

System and source books:

This game will be run on the D&D 5e system.

To facilitate gameplay on our virtual table top, please create a character on the website DnD Beyond You will need only a free membership to do so. The invitation to the campagign from your GM should allow you to access the following resources for characer creation:

  • D&D Player's Handbook, 5e
  • Fizban's Treasury of Dragons
  • Tasha's Cauldron of Everything

House Rules

Please use the "points buy" system for determining your pc's ability scores.

Also, keep in mind this is a low tech world. Gunpowder does not exist. Warforged are not a race option for pc's. Aside from those two points, I'm open to players choosing from the many options avaliable in the source books. However, be warned that if you want to play something really off the beaten path, you will have to create a backstory strong enough to support it.

For a general description of the area your character would be from, including climate, economy and deities, go to the article Grytack

.

I will expect players to work out their backstory and local connections with me via Discord or email before session 0.

Gameplay

Tech and Game Mechanics

This campagn is currently using Roll 20 as our Virtual Table Top. ( I am researching and trying out the Forge hosted on Foundry, we may mover there at a later date.) Players only need a free account and an invite to sign in. The integration between roll 20 and dnd Beyond is good, so you can roll or invoke details from you character sheet on DnD Beyond, and the results along with descriptions will show up in the chat log on Roll 20. Handouts, such as descriptions of magic items, clues, small maps etc, will be kept on Roll 20 in the player journals.

Communication during the game will be carried out via DIscord. Personally, I'm still on the fence about using video - I am used to voice only. Make sure you have an invite to my server.

General World Meta-Game Lore

This world is an echo of much of the Lost Realms, and the current D&D campaign settings. It is also an echo of the Pacific Northwest region of North America. So if you are familiar with either one, you will recognize features, landmarks, and lore from these sources. However, don't assume that everything in this echo is identical to the origionals. Yes, Waterdeep exists - where in our reality you would find Astoria, OR (more or less anyway). Neverwinter is still on the TriBoar Trail, north of Waterdeep, roughly where Tacoma sits, though the primordial forest that is nearby is the Ho rainforest. Distances are a bit fudged to facilitate game play.

Technology, economies, and political structures are somewhat equivalent to Early renaissance in north western Europe. Colonialism never happened (at least in the way it did IRL).

In this region, humans and dwarves are the most numerous demographic, followed by halflings, gnomes and half-elves. Dragonborn, tieflings and elves are represented in small minorities. Orcs are a serious threat in the region, so while half-orcs aren't all that rare, they do face serious prejudice. Other races would be considered exotic, or unrecognized by the locals.

My Game Style

Generally, I would classify myself as a RAW Game master. That said, the rule of cool is not anathema to me, but mostly I want to keep things consistant with the logic of this world. I like playing in a sandbox environment, so be aware that just because your character is able to enter or travel to a place Does Not Mean they are equipped to survive it. I will do my very best to avoid infringing on PC's agency. In return, I ask that you as players give me enough warning if you really want to go "off book" in a new direction.

Thematically, I prefer an adventure with moments of calm, chances to explore, and good friends with whom to find trouble. I am not likely to venture into the horror genre. I do like the occasional dungeon slog, but I've got all these new toys (aka FToD, and TCoE) to play with, and I can't wait to try them out!

Laughter, adrenilan, and character development are the three things I value most in a RPG. I try to balance my games at:

  • 30% ridiculasness
  • 30% combat or conflict
  • 40% character development/RP opportunities

So, I hope you found this article informative, and I look forward to spinning a wild story with you!
