giant
Enormous apes inhabited territory adjacent to the prehistoric River Culture tribes. Calling them "giants", the tribes generally feared them due to their size (more than twice the overall size of an adult human) and elusive nature. The giants in turn considered humans to be dangerous due to their use of weapons, and avoided them whenever possible. The only known case of extended human/giant interaction occurred at a point where the two species' territory came closest to overlapping. A female giant grieving the loss of her infant felt the sensation of a human infant in great pain, and rescued and nursed a baby boy abandoned according to tribal customs. From time to time other giants obtained surrogate babies in this manner, and there were nearly always two or three human boys living with the giants' troop. The human population swelled when one of the boys took a direct interest in the human tribe, rescuing babies on a more regular basis. The resulting human pack occupied a kind of buffer zone between giant territory and human territory, but lasted for only a few decades before the tribe discovered their presence. The pack and associated giant troop migrated away from the disputed territory, with the pack leaving the giant habitat entirely. Since that migration, there have been no encounters between giants and humans. The only hint of their existence is in the myths passed down from prehistoric days.
