Personal history

I know very little about myself. I know not my age, and I was never given a real name. My earliest memories are those of being surrounded by mages and doctors, whose faces and names have faded from my memory, and them experimenting on me. Of course, I had no idea what was happening at the time. At some point, I was declared a failure and knocked unconscious.   I simply sat in the room I woke up in as before that I would be reprimanded for leaving. After what must have been several days, I felt starvation creep to unbearable levels. I left the room, the door unlocked. As I wandered this new location, I noticed there was a complete lack of other people. After some time wandering, I smelled food and discovered a dining area with enough food for a single person. After I ate, I continued to investigate the house. It had many completely empty rooms, a kitchen stocked with the basics, one fully furnished, bedroom, and finally, a fully stocked library.   Meals would appear once a day in the dining area. The food wasn't extravagant, but they were enough to keep me alive. Every time a mess was made, it would seemingly vanish by the next day. The front and back doors were locked and the windows were seemingly indestructible. In the beginning, I tested my surroundings by increasingly drastic measures. It started by calling out, then yelling, then screaming, then attempting to break the windows and doors. Nothing caused any sort of reaction.   Once I had calmed down, I re-examined the house, finding my way back to the library. The further I analysed the collection and realized that it was far bigger than I had previously thought: hundreds of thousands of books of all kinds throughout hundreds of genres. With genuinely nothing else to do, I started to read. Reading became all I did, to the point that I took the mattress from the bed, the chairs from through the house, as well as the pillows and blankets, and brought them all to the extensive library.   After that, my days became... stagnant. I would just read. Word after word, page after page, tome after tome, collection after collection. At the start, I would go to the dining area for food, but after I spent three days straight in the library, food started appearing at the door to the library when I wasn't looking, allowing me to confine myself within the library. And that was my life... for years. I read. And read. Sometimes I would panic about my seclusion, but no matter what I did, nothing would change, so I kept reading. I taught myself a couple of languages, folklore, histories, etc. Over time, whenever I needed something specific, it would show up, including glasses, mirrors, and bookmarks. I read a novel in which names gave the characters their power, and I realized, I didn't have a name. Thinking on the naming conventions of people through fiction, I decided to dub myself "Nona", short for "No Name".   At some point, I discovered books of magic and started my study. Tomes upon tomes of various theorems and spells. I poured through them and eventually I understood and was able to cast magic. I found a small blank book which I started recording spells into. Then, I started reading a fascinating book that postured that there was a way to copy every type of spell into one's spellbook as long as certain requirements are fulfilled. Some of these requirements were simple things like the most powerful level of spells the person can cast, and a certain procedure that is needed while copying the spell itself, but if it were that simple is would be common practice. I started fantasizing about being able to cast *every* spell.   One day, I was suddenly awoken by the sounds of loud banging throughout the house. As I came to consciousness I smelled smoke. I looked around and noticed black fumes coming from the top of the door. Using my *superb* deductive reasoning and determined that the house was on fire. I quickly grabbed the things I thought were important and put them in a bag that I found in the bedrooms before. The last thing I was able to grab was some ink before the doors to the library door burst open. There stood four beings dressed in all black with plain white masks. They seemed threatening, so I tested my offensive magic for the first time, managing to take out one. Before I could even cast a second spell, I was overtaken by the remaining assailants. I was, like I had been years before, knocked unconscious.   I woke up outside of a burning building. It was three stories, and the windows were tinted. The midday sun was shining overhead. I was covered in soot, and I held a bag with the few things I had managed to collect along with a dagger and 10gp. I checked my pocket to find my small leather-bound spellbook. I looked around. I was out of the house. I was free. I didn't know what to do. And I still don't...
