Dhamaq

Dhamaq is the largest country in the Shallow Expanse. The official culture of the country is Eurabic, but about half the country is of Tehrani.

Government

Dhamaq is a unitary state under the rule of the Harbinger, the voice of the gods, and the 19 high priests. Their rule and interpretation of the gods' will is law. There are famous Noble Houses that often fall into these spiritual roles, but as families they do not hold direct power. Dhamaq is also famous for its extensive paladin oath system with the Nineteen Guard Companies. Unlike many other churches, the one in Dhamaq has an exclusive oath only for members of the military. It is actually punishable by death for any paladin of this oath to teach an outsider the tenets and traditions.

History

Dhamaq was officially recognized as a country in 503, but the church didn't gain full control until the late 620s. Before this, the Noble Houses had actual power within the government. In 1068, a group of mages rebelled against the church as they felt the high priests were corrupt. This led to a civil war within Dhamaq which came to an end in 1071 with the independence of Ghomaha.
