Mhiilamniir Council Guard
The Mhiilamniir Council Guard are an elite bodyguard detail that have their origins in the old King's Guard, and which in the present day protect the Council Hall and the Council of Mhiilamniir when its members are in session. Primarily made up of decorated and proven soldiers from the Mhiilamniir Army, the Council Guard are sometimes used as a frontline combat unit, usually to hold the centre of the army's famous phalanx. However, this is rarely resorted to; the last time it was done was the Battle of Mhiilamniir, when the unit shielded the militiamen behind them until the enemy broke through and cut down many of their number. The unit has struggled to regain its previous strength since then, although its standards for entry remain high.
Composition
Manpower
At around 100 guardsmen, the Council Guard have been substantially weakened since their devastating losses during the Battle of Mhiilamniir. Typically around 180-200 in strength, a veteran core that survived the battle have been slowly rebuilding over the five years since then, bringing in promising soldiers from the regular army who proved their worth on the frontlines. The Guard's rigid requirements for entry remain unchanged, and they are still only taking the very best they can find, even if that means it will take much longer for them to return to their former strength.
Weaponry
The Council Guard is armed for ceremonial and frontline duties with longspears that are around 12 feet in length, with shafts and tips made of Ironwood and par-Brightsteel respectively. They carry a large, oval-shaped shield that is also made of par-Brightsteel, and which reaches from a guardsman's shin to their shoulder. These two parts of a guardsman's arsenal are considered vital to the phalanx tactics typically used by the Mhiilamniir Army. Other accoutrements include a short sword for use in close quarters and a dagger in case the sword is lost in combat. Guardsmen tend to wear half-plate armour of par-Brightsteel, with ordinary steel chain. The breastplate is embellished with the crest of Mhiilamniir, and the helmet has a feathery mane from the crown that is said to be made from unicorn hair, although this is doubted due to its rarity.
