Brainrot

Cerebellum Imputresco

Brainrot is a fungal disease that began in the Toadstool Thicket of Gholurai. An area of the Epipharea Rainforest where a variety of fungi and different corpse flowers grow and flourish, the Toadstool Ticket became a region of the forest where bands of mercenaries and crime organizations disposed of bodies and other incriminating evidence. It became regularly used by these groups because they knew that any form of decay would quickly and completely be consumed by the natural rot of the forest. The thicket is also accessible by boat or by land, which increased the criminal activity in the area. Although guards were posted at some entry points and trail heads, they were often easy to bribe and compliant with the frequent body disposal.

As the number of dishonored dead grew within the forest, the soil began to die and the mushrooms and fungi became increasingly abundant. The limits of the forest grew farther and farther, and finally the nearby farms and gardens were being affected by the death that grew in the loam. It was not realized until the citizens had consumed the local produce and agriculture that the Brainrot disease was discovered, and by then the number of infected was overwhelming. Many of those who first caught and died from Brainrot were misdiagnosed with melancholia or Ghoulstouch; a curse inflicted by disturbing the dead that results in a loss of sanity which causes death. By the time that it was discovered how Brainrot spread and could be cured, the disease had become an epidemic throughout the Western region of Gholurai.

Although some small towns and villages successfully quarantined and controlled the disease, the numbers of infected raged within the major cities of the continent. This caused waves of disease to roll through the rural countrysides and therefore many periods of quarantine throughout the epidemic to ensure health and safety

The spores find homes within the brain of the infected, and eat away at the lobe controlling impulse...

When the cause of the disease was traced back to the disposal of bodies in the Toadstool Thicket, a party of necromancers was sent in to gather information, cleanse the land, and locate, honor, and lay to rest the remains of the desecrated bodies that were brought there.
