Expeditioner

Adventurers in The Shattered Oceans go far beyond those who venture away from home, living a nomadic existence and seeking excitement at every possible turn. They travel to the farthest of reaches and into the Expanses to better chart already known territories and explore unknown ones that may not yet be recorded. These special folk seek to understand the Mysteries of the Mists, to uncover the parts of history that have been duried deeply and tucked far away. Many adventurers leave home and never return. Not by choice, simply because the extent of their travels would never feasibly allow them to do so. Part of developing in the profession is understanding and accepting this fact.

There are two ways to take up the profession of an adventurer/explorer: by joining a guild and taking contracts through them, or by taking up the trouble of personally purchasing a ship and forming a crew to go on a voyage. Nobles and members of Government will also hire Explorers for a wide variety of reasons. Although they normally will hire an Adventurer's Guild, there are some who will seek out (and generously pay) unaffiliated parties if they want to be more private with their affairs.

For those who choose to join an Adventurer's Guild: they will begin as an apprentice. During this time they will learn survival skills, cartography, combat and defense, stealth/espionage, lore, and diplomacy. They will also go on local quests with more experienced adventurers as part of their training. When they have completed the apprenticeship, they are gifted an item from the Guild that relates to the area of adventuring where they excelled most. Although the adventurer is sworn to that Guild, all of the major organizations throughout the world have chapters that reach across all three of the Tripartites to which they can be transferred. Many Guilds also belong to greater Alliances: Adventuring Guilds with common goals that work together to achieve them, where explorers can be transferred to if needed.

Many different types of people seek out the profession of an Adventurer or Explorer; however, there is trend amongst them all: that there is something repelling them from their homes as strongly as there is something pulling them away. There is an unspoken unity in this fact that the Adventurer's Guilds throughout the world that helps to hold them together as individuals when they are standing at the edge of the world.
