The Iridescence
Following the Great Sundering and the fall to darkness of the Shattered Realms, basic nautical travel became impossible. The absence of both sunlight and constellations prevented effective navigation, and any vessels to land on distant shores did so purely out of sheer luck.
In the wake of the Great Sundering, the skies were filled with a great borealis - The Iridescence - beautiful, random, and forever in a state of unpredictable flow. While the unpredictable nature of the borealis did little to assist in navigation, it still serves as the only source of natural light for the planet, leaving The Shattered Realms in a state of perpetual twilight.
There are many theories about the nature of the Iridescence, from the most revered scholars to the most crackpot conspiracy theorists. Some believe the world of Solacium to have been a living entity, and that the Iridescence is the planet's soul, freed from its physical confines. Some believe it is it's own entity, pulled into the planet during a rare cosmic alignment. Some claim the Great Sundering destroyed all life in the cosmos, and the Iridescence is a great barrier, built by the gods to keep the horrors of the Astral Sea at bay. Some say it is a purgatory, where the souls of those who failed to pay respect to the gods are doomed to encircle the world for eternity.
For all of the many and varied theories, the most humble scholars will freely admit it all to be conjecture, and no one truly knows the nature of the Shattered Realms' most prominent natural phenomenon.
