Mined from the earth.
Gives off heat/explosion when struck. Functions like gunpowder. Used in bullets, Cannons, and Slag Turbine Ships.
Much of the Slag used in the skies was mined from Slag Point (which is controlled by Scalatoran companies). Also consider that there's no room for private ownerships of that - the scalatoran society would have to ensure that many companies have equal access/pricing to the Slag Point materials. some regulation of prices. Some smaller portion comes from Gardenia Springs. Who is willing to sell to Pirates. Scalatoran Feds balk at this. And there's some conflict/tension there, as when issues arrise at Slag Point, they get more desperate.
When Slag is used, there's a byproduct called "sludge" leftover that is uesd in making Darksteel()
