Words
Petition sand is a coarse, granulated substance that is found in the cavernous tunnels of Perdition Gates. The sand is black in colour, and is considered a very rare, valuable substance. It has several religious uses in the Raskvaerii religion of the Holy Chorus of Saints.
Location
Perdition sand can only be found in the cavernous networks that form so-called Perdition Gates. There are four Perdition Gates in the Saeric Basin: one in each Saeric country. While this black sand can be found at every location, it is only systematically gathered from the Perdition Gate in Raskvaeric. The natural caverns system has been widened and man-made tunnels created, in order to meet the demand for the substance.
Composition
Black sand beaches tends to occur in areas with historic or current volcanic activity, and is created with hot lava meets the salt water. This sand usually contains basalt. The properties of black sand differ drastically with the expected composition of black sand, i.e. it does not contain any iron ore and so is not magnetic. It appears to be a mixture of ores and gemstones that have not been found in any other deposits outside of the Perdition Gates. These have been called celadium, erald and orphic, although they have never been found in sizes larger than the standard measurement of sand particles, which have a diameter of roughly 0.074-4.75 millimeters.
Uses
Perdition sand is used to make the glass vials used to house Souls. It is also used in some religious functions, such as hourglasses and in religious jewellery. The sand once used to be a decorative feature in some architectual plans, such as the Temple of Latharin. A layer of the sand would be pressed into the drying mortar between bricks.
