Session 11 - A Friendship Forged in Soot and Waterlogged Vengance

General Summary

Time has advanced to the 1st of Gozran. May the temperamental nature god bless us with good weather.

Recovering from their ordeal regarding the mitflits in the sycamore, the heroes take a moment to rest and consult their current situation. Gleaning insight from Mikmek, they learn that the place the Sootscale Kobolds call home is but a few hours away by foot. Additionally they learn that a purple kobold by the name of Tartuk has taken control of the tribe, keeping the current chief as a figurehead. The name strikes them as a bit odd and a bit too similar to a certain purple-headed gnome. Weighing their options, they come up with a few plans involving assisting the former chief regain his role or trying to expose Tartuk for being a fraud. Mikmek, being a kobold of the people, is wholly apathetic towards any of the options seeing as they get to eat and haven't been sacrificed yet.

Travelling south by Mikmek's directions they arrive at an unassuming hillock that has been worn by the assault of the weather over the years with a lone kobold with black scales standing out front. After a brief moment of abject horror by the sudden arrival of six large humanoids on horses, Mikmek hops off and calls out to the kobold, named Nakpik and shares a moment of bonding after being reunited. Mikmek explains to Nakpik that the statue has been retrieved and Nakpik says they would bring the heroes to the leader. Zolahma Yew notices the faded sign say "Oaktop Silver Mine" before pressing forward. Guiding them past traps, disarming an ambush, and passing through the blood-soaked shrine depicting horned devils, they come to the common room where a kobold wearing a feathered skull begins to rally the others to defend their home but the presence of Nakpik, Mikmek, and most importantly the statue prevent the combat. The kobold then introduces himself as Chief Sootscale and after intently focusing on the statue he demands its return. The heroes do so. He gazes into the statue and then smashes it, claiming that the curse of Old Sharptooth is no more and leads his loyal kobolds along with the heroes to challenge Tartuk, a kobold with similar mannerisms to Tartuccio. The resulting clash proved to be too overwhelming for the spiritual leader and escaped using invisibility and a hidden switch that lowered a wall. However after calming down after the battle that proved to be an illusion. Tartuk has escaped.

After assisting in reclaiming his tribe, Chief Sootscale thanked the heroes for their assistance and declared that these tall ones are friends and that the tribe is indebted to them. Additionally he gave a generous gift of wealth which the heroes declined, insisting on taking a single sack. Chief Sootscale then quickly shoved a bit of treasure into the said sack before gifting it to the heroes. Outplayed, the heroes graciously accepted.

Leaving the caverns, the heroes travelled eastward towards a bridge they noticed in the distance but were not able to get around to. Arriving the found the burnt out husk of a bridge crossing with bells situated on both sides. A small bit of investigation led to Deylen ringing the bell which caused a soggy humanoid to slowly rise out of the churning river and shamble his way over with ranseur clutched. As par for the course with the heroes, they did not make any attempt at attacking it as it moved closer. What wasn't par for the course was the creature speaking to them and from its waterlogged vocal cords it claimed it was Davik Nettles and demanded the corpse of The Stag Lord.
