Æcepan

The Law Keeper

Æcepan is the god of justice, law, order, and punishment. He is often depicted as a man holding a book in one hand and a sword in the other, wearing a robe made of pages of legal texts.   Shrines dedicated to Æcepan are mostly located in settlements near the town square or along the main thoroughfare of a town or village. These shrines consist of a circle of large stones, 30 feet across, and a stone statue depicting the god. Engraved on each of the stones is the symbol of Æcepan.

Divine Domains

Law

The Lawkeeper is said to have inspired those who would latter become the first Lawsworn to make the first legal codex, wherein was the described the laws and rule of conduct that the people of Ælnea are expected to follow throughout their lives. He is a deity who is impartial to his followers, caring only for the rule of law, which He expects everyone to follow. A Lawsworn who is found guilty of disobey the laws of Æcepan is banished from the order. Followers of Æcepan spends years pouring through legal codices and studying law to earn the favor of their impartial god, despite knowing that Æcepan favors no one, regardless of whether that someone is the greatest of kings and queens or the lowest of people of society. In Æcepan's eyes, all are equal and must be subject to the law without prejudice. No one, not even Æcepan is above the law.

Oaths

All oaths that are sworn are sworn in the name of Æcepan, giving rise to His name as Oathkeeper. Oaths are spoken statements made by a person, typically to another, to offer some service or to commit some deed. Any oath sworn to Æcepan is an oath that the swearer is obliged to follow through on, and failure to do so is subject to punishment. Those who break their oaths lose all credibility that they once possessed, and typically results in exile, or, for particularly dire oaths being broken, lead to execution. Many knights, when pledging their loyalty to a feudal lord or king, makes an oath to that person that invokes the name of Æcepan.

Punishment

As the god of law and oaths, Æcepan also deals in the punishments for failing to adhere to the law of the land or the keeping of oaths. Theses punishments are meted out to anyone who is found guilty of committing a crime or other injustice. Rarely does Æcepan Himself dole out these punishments, instead favoring to have his dedicated followers in the Lawsworn to mete out these punishments. Lawsworn decide punishments based off of local law, which in Ælnean typically consist of fines, blood prices, and the exchange of property or other assets between two or more parties. However, Æcepan does not approve of meting out disproportionate punishment, and those who punish a person more than is deserved are considered, themselves, to be in violation of the law.
