Coded Trial
The Coded Trial is the name of the initiation exam taken by initiates of the Lawsworn in order to become a full-fledged member of the order. The exam differs based on which role the initiate has applied for, but all forms of the Coded Trial has a written test that examines the initiate's knowledge of the law of the territory they wish to operate in.
Execution
The written portion of the exam ask questions regarding the many facets of the law that the initiate will have to know in their day-to-day as a Lawsworn. The initiate may attempt to take the exam once a year until they pass. This exam is observed by a Lawspeaker or Sworn Judge, who will be on the lookout for any signs of cheating, both mundane and magical. If cheating is detected, the initiate will be expelled from the monastery and be blacklisted from all other monasteries belonging to the Lawsworn; being blacklisted in this way can also hinder a expelled initiate's attempts to enter the field of law in any capacity outside of the Lawsworn order.
After passing the written exam, the initiate will then move on to the second part of the Coded Trial, which is specific to the role they have applied for: Lawspeaker, Judge or Oathbinder, or Blade. Lawspeaker initiate's are tasked with writing their own copy of a legal codex and then, in the presence of an official Lawspeaker, reciting that codex word by word from memory. Initiates who applied to be either a Judge or Oathbinder must undergo a mock trial where the initiate presides over a simulated case and must reach a satisfactory judgement for the trial. Blade initiates have to pass a physical exam to show that they possess the capabilities to subdue a criminal and will have to execute a criminal who has been sentenced to death.
