Century of Strife

The Century of Strife (9th century CR) were a series of wars and campaigns waged by the newly ascended god Bane and his worshipers against the various races of the Material Plane.
Unrecorded in modern history is the role of the Banesmark in these conflicts, a powerful mark that can force any creature bearing it to submit to Bane's will.
The century ended in failure for Bane, who had angered most of the good-aligned deities of the world. Bane retreated, licking his wounds, and began looking for a less brute force method to control mortals.

The Hand of Mana, an organization of some of the world's most powerful magic users, was formed to combat Bane. Following his defeat, these members began a concerted effort to erase any and all mentions of the Banesmark from history, erasing memories and destroying historical documents in turn. Though the organization's goals would evolve in to protecting the world from powerful and harmful magical items, its members were always on guard to stamp out any resurfacing of the Banesmark.
