Envy Eightstrings

Envy Eightstrings

Envy Eightstrings is a tiefling storyteller, traveler of Avernus, an agent of Dispater.

History

At some point prior to 1497, Envy fell in love with Ian Eightstrings, a bard that had traded his ability to speak to Dispater in exchange for a perfect singing voice. Envy began traveling with Ian and became able to interpret his gestures and expressions with ease, and the two were moderately successful as traveling performers. However, Envy also learned of how Ian regretted the deal he had made in his youth. Desperate to make his love happy, Envy began working for Dispater as well, believing that will enough services rendered, the two of them could live freely. Even though Ian privately worried that Envy was taking a fool's errand, he couldn't dissuade him.   In Marpenoth of 1497, Envy and Ian were dispatched by Dis to talk with the Lost Star Detectives and uncover what information they could about their attempts to end the Damnation of Elturel. Having traveled from Dis, they were instantly met with hostility by Alesine Zadava, a former cultist of Dispater herself, but the rest of the group was willing to share their stories, especially Arcus Miursa.   However, Arcus' boastful storytelling, and the subsequent sharing of his exploits by Envy and Ian, drew the attention of the hag Zilly Redwood, who rendered Arcus mute in his youth and sabotaged any effort he made to "find his voice," literally or metaphorically. Zilly used her magic to teleport Envy and Ian to her to prevent their stories of Arcus from spreading, but Envy misinterpreted the spell as an act of maliciousness by the Detectives, prompting him to break a magical crystal in his possession, binding his fate to the Detectives.   Because of this, the resulting teleportation spell took nearly the entire group to the Material Plane, however only Envy made it to Zilly's lair in a forest outside of the village of Triel in the Western Heartlands. Envy was imprisoned by Zilly, who intended to make what use of the tiefling she could.   Before she could do too much, the Detectives arrived a day later with Ian to kill Zilly and free Envy, which they did so. Despite lingering misgivings, one of the Detectives Katya Sinaran, freed Envy from his cage without a second thought, finding the love between Ian and Envy similar to her own complicated relationship to her wife Emmeryn. In thanks for saving Envy, the two travelers promised to wait some time before reporting what they saw and heard back to Dispater, and they were left on the Material Plane by the Detectives when they returned to Hell.
