Soul Trap

A soul trap is a rare, magically-enhanced jewel capable of trapping souls in close proximity to them.

Utility

A soul trap's power, range, design, and shape vary between individual devices. At their most basic, a soul trap acts as a magnet, drawing nearby souls into the trap, containing them. While some soul traps can only contain a single soul, others have been noted to hold several.
All known soul traps are gemstones of some type. Though there does some to be some loose correlation between the type of a gemstone and a soul trap's power and range, it is clear that the larger a gemstone, the more powerful the device is.
One extraordinary case is the God Trap, a soul trap powerful enough to hold a nigh unlimited amount of souls and even part of a god. Though it's non-jeweled design has led to some dissent on whether or not the the God Trap is indeed a type of modified soul trap or something else entirely.

Manufacturing

The process of making soul traps has been lost to time. Magical researchers from Waterdeep to Thay have spent generations attempting to discover the secret that makes them work.

Access & Availability

Soul traps are exceedingly rare. Those that have them are often reticent to use them, due to the worry that they might be stolen or lost.
