Stabalizing Avernian Distances
Standardizing Avernian Distances is the process by which distances between two objects on the plane of Avernus, which normally varies wildly, can be standardized. However, doing so comes at a great cost to ones sanity.
Manifestation
Avernus, the uppermost layer of the Nine Hells, is normally extremely difficult to traverse. As an inifitely expanding plane, the disntances between any two locations can vary greatly, making the military campaigns of the Blood War difficult to coordinate. However, as a plane of law, order can be imposed upon it by mapping it.
Creating a map of a section of Avernus forces the plane to shift to match the mapmaker's perception of it. While traveling Avernus with a map that cooresponds to where a traveler is, the distances between objects will become stablized for the person, or group, carrying the map. This can lead to strange circumstances where two groups traveling in parallel may reach the same destination at different times, depending on the map they are using.
However, mapmaking in Avernus comes at a steep cost. Due to the nature of imposing ones will upon a plane of existence, in a sense using one's own mind as a tool to reshape the land, mapmakers of Avernus universally go insane as their mind fractures from the stress.
Additionally, one does not need to be aware of how a map works for it to benefit a group, so long as only one member of the group is aware of this natural law. However, learning the secret of mapping Avernus, whether by being told or discovering it for oneself, opens an individual's mind up to reshape the landscape, albeit along a guideline. That initial realization can sometimes cause bouts of longterm maddness.
