House of Ilmater
This simple whitewashed stone building in Waterdeep's North Ward is the centre of worship of the God Ilmater in the city. Here the acolytes and priests practise healing magics and support the poor and infirm in whatever way they can, relying primarily on the generosity of donations.
Ilmater is the Faerûnian God of endurance, martyrdom and suffering, known also by the Crying God, or the Broken God. Often depicted as a man in simple cloth, with open wounds and broken limbs, but nevertheless still moving forwards to help ease the burdens of others. To be a worshipper of Ilmater is to put the wellbeing of others above your own, exalting compassion, kindness and forgiveness.
Though some sects of the Ilmateri religion can tend towards the extremes of self-flagellation and martyrdom, the majority of churches in large cities are simple houses of healing, charity and contemplation. The Waterdhavian House of Ilmater is often visited by the poor and homeless, especially from the nearby Field Ward, where the clergy diligently tend to their ills as best they can. The priests can be identified by their plain robes and red cords worn tied around their wrists, much like the symbol of Ilmater that adorns the doors. Although there is no authoritative structure, the House is overseen by Revered Brother Derrek, a middle aged Dwarf who has shaved his beard entirely in a display of his dedication to the House, and rejection of worldly status.
