Credence's Contained Concerts

Mechanics & Inner Workings

The bulk of the device is used for storing coins that are placed in the device as payment. This is the base of the unit, which is a simple box where coins could be dumped. The mechanism for sorting coins sits above this, which connects to the gears that controlled the buttons.

Above the buttons was the array of records, set where the button could touch the trigger. The outer casing held all of this in place, as well as having a slot for the speaker in front.

History

Credence had been developing a system to magically encode devices with sounds. He explored a number of types of illusions, and found a workable method, although they required more power than his normal devices. He did not see it being worth manufacturing, but he enjoyed creating them for the amusement of himself and his friends.

When Damien Bartles began his network of Kenku performers, he saw the possibilities. The power needed was higher for the spells, but still achievable, and Bartles had shown a market. By making many different recordings, he could more easily change to meet the demand, and each of his recordings would only require a one time cost to create, rather than needing to pay the Kenku for a lifetime.

He also needed a method for taking the money in exchange for playing the songs. He designed a box that allowed coins to be dropped in a slot - the coins were separated by size, and the value counted. When a given amount was reached, it would unlock a set of buttons that could be used to select the music to be played. The "records", as he called them for short, would trigger based on the button press, and play the sounds through the front. That was enchanted with his previous design that enhanced people speaking in public forums. This "speaker", as he had dubbed it, could adjust the noise level to fit the room.

His current factories could not produce the devices he needed, so he had to look elsewhere.
